Ganondorf Amiibo UPDATE!

Nintendo has confirmed that the Ganondorf Amiibo is due out on store shelves September 2015.

The Ganondorf Amiibo design favors Twilight Princess, with possibly a few cues as seen in the design for Hyrule Warriors.

  • Super Smash Bros Wii U/3DS
  • Hyrule Warriors
  • Mario Party 10
  • Captain Toad Treasure Tracker

Whether you are getting into the fad or staying away from it, one thing is for certain: Nintendo is enjoying their Amiibo sales.

Dating back to December, Nintendo mentioned that Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U has sold over 710,000 copies, and that the Amiibo sales mirror pretty closely. Nintendo has not given 100% confirmation on actual Amiibo unit sales, but this is still an impressive number considering this would reflect Wave 1 Amiibos (Mario, Link, Peach, Yoshi, Samus, etc).

But here’s the real question, Zelda fans: Where is the Ganondorf Amiibo? If we follow the wave release schedule, we have Link in wave 1, Zelda in wave 2, and then Toon Link in wave 3. I’ll also mention that we get Shiek in Wave 3. Yes, the release pattern goes Link, Zelda, Toon Link, Shiek (or another form of Zelda). No Ganondorf.

Why does Ganondorf matter? Well, he’s pretty much the 2nd most common Nintendo bad guy right behind Bowser. He’s one of the fated to wield 1/3 of the Triforce. He’s pretty much the coolest bad guy in the Nintendo universe. We get excited when we see him show up in games and disappointed when he doesn’t.

Ganondorf as an Amiibo would also make some of us Zelda fans really happy as he would round out our sets nicely.

Researching why Ganondorf isn’t out or announced yet, I discovered that Nintendo is also releasing the Super Mario Pack of Amiibos, which will consist of Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Toad, and Yoshi. This pack is due out sometime in March. These Amiibo’s will be a little different than their previously released counterparts.

Wave 4 for the Amiibo (due out Spring 2015, presumably April/May) currently has this roster:

  • Charizad
  • Lucina
  • Ness
  • Pac-Man
  • Robin
  • Wario

Bowser appears in wave 3 and in the Super Mario Pack. Bowser gets two Amiibos before Ganondorf even gets one.

Ganondorf serves as a playable character for three Nintendo titles as it stands, so it’s not like he’d be a wasted character. He’s already in Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS, Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U, and Hyrule Warriors. A Ganondorf Amiibo could provide some benefits to Link for Mario Kart 8, perhaps a Gerudo inspired Kite?

But no, we still have to wait.

Ganondorf Amiibo Suggestion

The above statue is pretty similar in design to the Ganondorf Trophy from previous Smash Bros. games. This concept, though not resembling the Ganondorf model in Super Smash Bros. would still make a great addition to the Amiibo line up.

What are your thoughts on the missing Ganondorf Amiibo from the lineup? Are you interested in getting one? Would Ganondorf complete your current Legend of Zelda Amiibo grouping? Tell us in the comments below!
