Zelda Wii: Coming Sooner Than You Might Think

Eiji Aonuma is talking again. This time, he sat down with Official Nintendo Magazine to give us the lowdown on Zelda Wii. Here’s all you need to know:

  • MotionPlus is in, and it’s really accurate with your body movements.
  • Zelda Wii follows a new formula unlike previous entries- expect surprises.
  • The game is far into development- an E3 2010 showing looks likely.
  • Graphical style has yet to be chosen. Don’t expect a cel-shaded style though.
  • Aonuma is looking to Monster Hunter Tri for inspiration. Zelda Wii might incorporate ideas from that game.

The last point was most interesting to me. MH3 is huge in Japan and this might be a move on Nintendo’s part to expand Zelda’a dwindling popularity there. Other than that, it’s somewhat strange that they haven’t settled on an art style yet. On the other hand, this could be a good thing. As much as I loved Twilight Princess’s art direction, I would be somewhat disappointed if they went with the same style shown in the artwork at E3. What do you think?

We have a thread devoted to this topic. Feel free to join the conversation at any time.

On the last point, I wonder if part of that inspiration is with incorporating multi-player functionality into the game. So far all the flagship titles for the Wii have done this (NSMB Wii, Super Mario Galaxy…) It would be a first for Zelda…but we have been told to expect surprises.

Also, I'd assume that they have of course chosen a graphical style at this point…they are going to demo at E3. My only hope is that the colors and textures are not so murky and dim as TP, the crispness of SMG gives me confidence this won't be the case.

I think you're forgetting Metroid Prime 3. That game didn't have multiplayer which was weird, because "Echoes" did, but you may be on to something.

Concerning graphics, you'd think they would have gotten around to that by now, but I can't really say. Stranger things have happened. I'm sure they have most if not all of the gameplay mechanics figured out.

I agree with you on TP's graphics.
