Every year in Valencia, Spain, a festival known as Fallas is celebrated. This festival draws in tourists from all the regions of the world. Fallas is a celebration where artists create sculptures known as fallas. The sculptures, which can be as tall as 10 meters, are created out of mache, cardboard and wood. These sculptures are normally based off of pop culture and political topics. In terms of pop culture, one artist has definitely stood out among Zelda fans. This year, artist Jorge Navarro Doñate created statues based off The Legend of Zelda series.

Jorge’s sculptures this year featured characters from Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and Wind Waker. Some of these characters include Darunia, the Happy Mask Salesman, Darmani and many other familiar faces. He also has created a set of fallas based off of the Pokemon series where characters such as Sudowoodo, Onix, and Aerodactyl were displayed. Additionally a Pokedex featuring the description of each displayed Pokemon was created as well.

Though thousands of tourists come to enjoy the art at this five day event, unfortunately the event ends this evening. While these beautiful creations have captivated fans and awed spectators, these statues were not meant to last forever. They serve a more traditional purpose.

Fallas, as mentioned earlier as both the name of the festival and the names of the statues, is a term that translates to torches. That is correct; these statues serve as torches. That means that at the end of the celebration, everyone’s sculptures will be burned in the streets throughout town. Though the festival may be coming to a close, there is always next year to look forward to.
