Zelda for the Wii to be Harder and Use Wiimote Like a Sword

Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of popular series such as The Legend of Zelda and Mario, recent sat down to discuss various things including the progress of the upcoming Spirit Tracks game for the Nintendo DS and the next Zelda game for the Wii.

In the interview, he states that The Spirit Tracks is going to be a lot harder and more creative then its prequel, The Phantom Hourglass. A translation of his quote says, “[Zelda ST] will be really fun. It’s turning out to be rather challenging. Many of our Japanese customers were introduced to the Zelda series with Phantom Hourglass, and ST could prove to be kind of hard for them, but I thought we’d show them what Zelda is really made of this time around. So it’s turning into quite a unique title.”
But now for the good part concerning The Legend of Zelda for the Wii. Mr. Miyamoto said that he wants to implement the Wiimote to act as a sword in the new Zelda Wii game. In Twilight Princess, users simply shook the remote to swing the sword. Shigeru however found this to be much too simple.

By using the Wii Motion Plus, he wants to enable gamers to actually use the Wiimote as if it were a real sword. This means we should expect to be swinging that remote all over the place when Zelda Wii comes rolling out.

His translated quote states, “About MotionPlus. We’re implementing it so that players can feel like they themselves are holding the sword. In the previous Zelda (TP Wii) the targeting was based on the IR pointer. This time however, we’ll be using MotionPlus for a variety of more convenient targeting systems that will allow for more pleasant gameplay.”

Whatever Nintendo has in store, it is bound to be interesting.
