Nintendo streamed a Nintendo Direct for specifically providing details for Splatoon, which is set to release on May 29th. Below is a list of many of the details mentioned in the stream.

Inklings:

  • In Splatoon, players take control of Inklings and shoot Ink to control territory.
  • Inkling are squids that can change from a humanoid form on land to a squid form when submerged in ink of their own color
  • Can customize an Inkling’s gender, skin tone, and eye color.
  • When submerged in ink, the Inkling’s movement speed is about two times faster than normal running speed.
  • Can swim up walls when submerged in ink.
  • Some areas and barriers cannot be covered with ink, so Inklings cannot submerge in them.
  • Ink can only be shot while in humanoid form.
  • Cannot swim through enemy ink. It also inhibits their walking speed.
  • Getting hit by enemy ink damages an Inkling. Enough damage makes them bursts, scattering enemy ink where they fall.

Inkopolis

 

  • Inkopolis is the Splatoon’s central hub through which all other game modes are accessed.
  • Booyah Base is a section of Inkopolis that contains various shops where players can buy Gear and weapons.
  • The clothing store, called Jelly Fresh, specializes in selling tops. It is run by a jellyfish named Jelonzo.
  • The shoe shop is Shrimp Kicks, owned by a shrimp named Crusty Sean.
  • The head gear shop, Cooler Heads, sells hats, glasses, and other types of head gear. The shopkeeper is Annie, an anemone with a clownfish named Moe in her hair.
  • The Weapon Shop, Ammo Knights, sells weapons in sets (main, sub, and special weapons) the Inkling can equip. The selection of weapons improves as Inklings level up. The owner of this shop is a horseshoe crab named Sheldon.
  • Inklings will gather around Booyah Base. Their designs are based on Inklings met through online modes. Players can order gear these Inklings are wearing.
  • In the Inkopolis plaza is an arcade machine that can be played while waiting for online matches to start. One game on the machine is Squid Jump.
  • Amiibo can used used by accessing an Amiibo kiosk somewhere in Inkopolis.

 

Multiplayer

  • Defeated Inklings will respawn; when they do, they can use the “Super Jump” to launch to a teammate by tapping on their icon on the Gamepad.
  • Players receive points based on their performance. These points are redeemable currency. Points are also used as experience to level up your Inkling.
  • Different multiplayer maps include Urchin Underpass, Saltspray Rig, Blackbelly Skatepark, Walleye Warehouse, and Arowana Mall.
  • In the Battle Dojo, players can play local multiplayer. They compete to earn points by bursting balloons. Players loose point if their Inkling is destroyed. Double points are earned during the last two minutes of play. One player plays on the Gamepad while another uses another controller such as the Pro Controller.
  • Inkopolis tower is where players go to compete in online multiplayer. Modes for this play type or Regular Battle and Ranked Battle.
  • Regular Battles are the Turf Wars. Player teams are decided randomly, even if friends join a match.
  • Turf wars is a four versus four online multiplayer mode in which players compete to cover the playing field with more of their ink than the opponents within three minutes. The victor of this mode is decided by a cat named Judd.
  • Ranked Battles have multiple play modes. One mode has a splat zone in which Inklings compete to control certain areas of a stage for the longest amount of time.
  • Ranked Battles have players of similar ranks compete against each other. They can only be accessed once a player has reached Level 10. This mode will not be available until enough players have reached Level 10.

Single player mode

  • The single-player campaign can be accessed through a manhole. Players become agents working for Cap’n Cuttlefish to fight against the Octarians. There are many different types of Ocarians, some who fight like Inklings.
  • Inklings go on mission to recover what is called a Zapfish, which was stolen by the Octarians.
  • Inklings can use the Octarian’s gadgets against them, often by firing ink at them. These obstacles include Propellers, Geysers, Sponges, Ink Rails, Balloon Fish, Invisible Floors, Cannons, and Flooders.
  • Certain items can be found in the Octarians’ lair to help the player, such as Armor and Bubblers. Power Eggs are items that can be gathered and used to power up weapons. A Sunken Scroll is an item that can be found hidden in each stage.

Gear

  • Players an customize their Inklings’ outfits called “Gear”. They an choose from different hats, glasses, outfits, and shoes.
  • Gear can be used to enhance an Inklings abilities. These abilities do things like save on ink consumption or aid with stealth.
  • A piece of Gear’s number of abilities is relies on its slots (indicated by a number stars), and one piece can have as many as four slots.
  • Other than the first ability equipped, other abilities are assigned randomly. Some abilities have to be unlocked by leveling up the Gear.
  • An urchin named Spyke can help increase the slots on Gear in exchange for Super Sea Snails.
  • Gear that is ordered can be received from Spyke.

Weapons

  • There are three types of main weapons: Shooter, Charger, and Rollers
  • Shooters rapid fire while the trigger button is held. Splattershot is a type of Shooter that decent range. Aerospray MG has short range, but it covers a wider area. Jet Squelcher has a long range. The Blaster fires exploding ink bullets.
  • Chargers focus on long range with a shot that covers a straight path with ink. The Splat Charger has a relatively short charge time. E-Liter 3K has a longer charge time, but it has a greater range. Splatterscope has a scope for precise aiming.
  • Rollers are used for covering wide areas and close-ranged attacks. Splat Roller splatters ink around an area and at enemies. Dynamo Roller moved slowly but can deflect enemy fire.
  • Sub weapons consume more ink and include Splat Bomb, Sprinkler, Seeker, Spalsh Wall, Suction Bomb, Burst Bomb, Point Sensor, Ink Mine, Squid Beakon, and Disruptor.
  • Special weapons can only be used when filling a gauge by spreading enough ink. They include Inkzooka, Killer Wail, Inkstrike, Echolocator, Bubbler, and Kraken.

Amiibo

 

  • Go to the Amiibo kiosk in Inkopolis and Inkling Amiibo, the Girl, Boy, and Squid Inklings, when tapped to the Gamepad, will offer 20 different missions each.
  • The Inkling Girl has Charger missions that must be completed using only the Charger weapons.
  • The Inkling Boy has straightforward challenges.
  • The Inkling Squid offers a mix of different missions, such as limited ink challenges.
  • Completing the missions unlocks special Gear. Completing them all unlocks new arcade minigames, like Squidball, Squid Racer, and Squid Beatz.

 

Free updates and events

  • Splatoon will receive free updates with plenty of content, which will be several new stages, weapons like a Roller called the Inkbrush, more Gear, and modes for Ranked Battles like Tower Control and Rainmaker.
  • In Tower Control, a player will stand on a tower which will move, as long as it is occupied, toward a goal in enemy territory. This makes that Inkling a target for opponents, and allies must protect the Inkling on the tower.
  • There are no details on Rainmaker just yet, but there is a reason for its names.
  • There is a major post-launch update planned for August 2015. It will add new options for matchmaking, such as playing together with friends in Turf Wars.
  • Squid sisters, Callie and Marie, are Inkling popstars and newcasters that report on events called Splatfests. These are events in which players are assigned to different teams based on a vote.
  • Winning in Splatfests can earn players Super Sea Snails that can be used to improve gear.
  • Splatfests take place a specific dates. The first take place from on June 20th and 21st. The them is a vote on a preference between cats or dogs.
  • Nintendo has released Splatoon: Global Testfire, a free demo available through the Nintendo eShop.
  • Pre-ordering Splatoon at GameStop earns a code from free DLC in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. The DLC is for Mii costume of the Inkling Boy, Girl, and Squid.
