Ocarina of Time 3D Review

When the original Ocarina of Time was released on the N64 it received high praise and a large amount of perfect reviews. Now, more than ten years later Nintendo and Grezzo got the chance to see how their remake of this classic could stack up against what many consider to be one of the few perfect games ever made.

Remaking the Ocarina of Time not only appealed to older fans of the series, but it also got newer fans excited to be able to play this legendary Zelda title on an up to date console. Would fans from both generations appreciate what Nintendo and Grezzo had done with this game? The answer is a simple yes.

A lot of people have been wondering what is different about this version on the Nintendo 3DS compared to the original. Obviously the first and foremost difference is that of the graphics. An updated set of graphics is the first and most noticeble difference. Gone are the outdated pixelated backgrounds and characters. Everything in Hyrule including enemies, characters, and interfaces, have gotten a fresh new make over.

Ocarina of Time 3D honestly has some of the best graphics in all of the Legend of Zelda series. I would even dare to say that it is comparable in quality to that of Twilight Princess. They obviously sport a totally different artistic style but the overall quality and care that was put into the graphics really reflects how much work was done on this remake. New and old fans alike will appreciate the graphical overhaul and be able to once again be amazed at stepping out into Hyrule Field for the first time.

If that wasn’t enough for you than you are in luck as Nintendo took things a step further. By coming out on the 3DS Zelda fans get to experience Hyrule in full-on 3D effects. Everything from Cucoo feathers to fire to full on characters will jumpout of your screen.

Now I would like to note that at first the 3D effects was a bit hard on the eyes. However any strain was gone after about ten minutes of gameplay as your eyes will quickly become adjusted.

A lot of people have been wondering about the new features in Ocarina of Time 3D. What makes this game worth picking up if you played the original? Besides the polished and new 3D graphics, Nintendo went ahead and added some additional features into the game. The biggest addition is that of the Boss Rush challenge mode. After defeating the many bosses in the game, Link is able to go back to his house and face off against these monsters once more in a time trial kind of way. Now gamers can not only fight their favorite bosses whenever they want, but they can also compete and try to beat their best times.

Next Nintendo added a bunch of Easter Eggs and a new tips system. Through the means of Shiekah Stones gamers are able to get hints in the form of short videos that show gameplay elements of what needs to be done next.

The game’s overall interface has also improved as Nintendo went ahead and made the menus much easier to access and use. The majority of the menu options are done on the bottom touch screen which makes switching between items easier than ever. Nintendo also listened to our complaints about the Water Temple and improved several areas. Boots are now an equipable item and no longer require pausing gameplay to swap the boots on and off.

There are many other improvements onto the interface of several concepts within Ocarina of Time but that is something that you should experience for yourself.

One concept that is new to Ocarina of Time 3D that really requires gamers to experience it for themselves is the gyroscope ability. With this Link’s perspective is controlled by moving the 3DS up and down. Aiming arrows and the Hookshot has never been easier as this allows for a much more precise aim.

Finally if the original quest is not enough for you than the addition of the Master Quest should tie you over for many more hours of gameplay. Once the main quest is completed the Master Quest is unlocked and will put gamer’s up to a much harder task. Puzzles are entirely redone, much of the game is mirrored, and Link takes a lot more damage.

In conclusion Ocarina of Time 3D is a great remake of such a legendary classic. Nintendo has brought us a masterpiece with reformatted graphics and many more hours of extra gameplay. Attention has been paid to the smallest of details and thanks to that Ocarina of Time 3D is by far the best game for the 3DS at the time and is worth picking up.
