The following article contains spoilers regarding the Pokémon GO mobile smartphone app.

With the success of Nintendo’s recent mobile app, Miitomo, fans are looking forward to the release of Pokémon GO, their latest mobile gaming project. Currently in development under Niantic Labs, Pokémon GO is a smartphone app that allows players to capture Pokémon in the real world setting through their phone’s camera.

Multiple outlets have recently leaked beta footage of the unique mobile app. Character customization will start the beginning of the player’s journey. This includes choosing the ability to play as a boy or a girl and the option to change skin, hair, and eye color. Other customization factors in the beginning of Pokémon GO include hats, shirts, pants, shoes, and backpacks. It is unclear whether you can change the style of these items or only the color in the beginning of the game.

Gym battles in Pokémon GO are meant to be “controlled.” This means, according to the in-game text, “To control this Gym, you must pit your skills and your Pokemon in battle against others. Three teams compete for control of Gyms. You must choose to join one of the teams before you can battle.” The three teams available to join are Team Blue, Team Red, and Team Yellow. Battles are not automated; you swipe to dodge, tap, and hold to commence various attacks. It’s essentially an action battle system. Players are able to obtain eggs in Pokémon GO, similar to the Pokémon games, they hatch into baby Pokémon.

Seeing Pokémon wherever players may be will open the phone’s camera and allow you to see the Pokémon on whatever your camera is capturing. However, players have the option to catch Pokémon without activating the camera. Catching Pokémon will give you experience points and catching new ones will give you a bonus. According to the footage, players will level up. The only Pokémon seen on the app are from the first generation of Pokémon games. Beta testers have leaked their footage through YouTube over the past two days.
