Nintendo Announces Project NX

Nintendo has had an exciting day today. First the announcement of a new hardware system, then pair that announcement with the team-up with Japanese game developer DeNA for mobile Nintendo games!

The new system which is code named NX for the time being, has very little information surrounding itself. There is no distinction whether this is a new handheld or console device, but with the recent addition of the NEW 3DS, it is safe to assume it’s probably a new home console.

This probably comes as a surprise to most in the gaming community, assuming that Nintendo is drifting away from the hardware market, but President Iwata says:

As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development code name NX. It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.

Though the Wii U is under performing based on numbers from the Wii, Iwata continues to acknowledge the challenge in producing dedicated hardware in today’s society. “However, we recognize that our business model of producing both video-game hardware and software is effective even today, and we do not share this pessimistic view of the future for dedicated video-game systems.”

No further information has been produced regarding Project NX, but we can assume that by June 2015 at E3, Nintendo will probably put on their game face and have something to wow the fans.
