Late last night there was a report released stating that legendary Nintendo developer, Shigeru Miyamoto, may be retiring from his position at Nintendo. As you all know, Miyamoto is the man behind the Mario and Legend of Zelda franchises.
In an interview with Wired, Miyamoto is quoted as saying, “I’m not saying that I’m going to retire from game development altogether. What I mean by retiring is, retiring from my current position.”
This quote led many to think that Shigeru Miyamoto was retiring from his primary position at Nintendo. The article by Wired went on to discuss how Miyamoto was not leaving the industry, but was merely wanting to work on some smaller projects with smaller and younger development teams in contrast to the long development of games that often took several years.
However, since that story went public, Nintendo has been on the defensive and is stating the opposite. When contacted, Nintendo denied Miyamoto was stepping down from his role of, Senior Managing Director and General Manager of Nintendo’s Entertainment Analysis and Development Division (what a long title).
“This is absolutely not true. There seems to have been a misunderstanding. [Miyamoto] has said all along that he wants to train the younger generation. He has no intention of stepping down. Please do not be concerned.”
So apparently Miyamoto will be working on longer development but will now be assisting in teaching the younger generation of developers a thing or two.
With such a controversy, let us know what you would think of Miyamoto retiring? How would the game industry be impacted if Miyamoto did retire? Let us know in the comments.
