Majora’s Mask – Mystery of the Mirror Shield

Eiji Aonuma, director and producer of the Legend of Zelda series, had a few words with Nintendo DREAM concerning the state of Majora’s Mask 3D’s sister shield – the Mirror Shield.  When the interviewer brought up that the Happy Mask Salesman seems to share a mask with the likeliness of the shield, Aonuma states an interesting fact: the mask came first. He said the production team found it a bit difficult to come up with the pattern, not wanting to reuse Ocarina of Time’s “too detailed” image and felt that it would be out of place in a game like Majora’s Mask.

“But the Happy Mask Salesman is carrying a mask which has a face of distress, so wouldn’t it be interesting to use that one? Therefore, the Mirror Shield was born from what was previously a mask of Happy Mask Salesman.”

So, the shield came into existence because of the mask, and how the team thought the “face of distress” fit in with the tone of the game.

You have to admit there is something disturbing about that face, and it’s all too fitting that such a creepy character like the Happy Mask Salesman would find himself somehow behind it.

Are you inclined to agree with Aonuma’s logic? Do you think any other items in Majora’s Mask 3D take their inspiration from previous existing things in lore of Hyrule? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.
