Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword: IGN Breakdown

A recent article from the gaming site IGN has taken what they consider to be the top 5 things that fans should look forward to for Skyward Sword and the top things that fans may not exactly be thrilled about. I read it because I will read any article about the Legend of Zelda series, but in all honesty I do not feel as if IGN did a very good job on this particular piece.

Their top 5 negative things about Skyward Sword seem to be a bit off base or just your regular graphical complaints. 3 of the 5 have a complaint against the graphics in some form or another. One is about the tech demo that went badly at E3 which really does not hurt Skyward Sword as everything from the actual floor said that the controls were smooth. Their last point is that the Zelda formula may be getting old to some. And while I agree with this, Nintendo has stated many times that things will be different in this game and that even the stale temple formula is getting shaken up.

IGN then finishes this piece with the top 5 things that we can look forward to. Their choices range from 1:1 controls, enemies looking harder, and more. To read the full article, click here.

Besides her comment about how the game's graphics is too much different than the poster, I'm not sure I completely agree with her.

IGN never does any good with articles

I think you completely misinterpreted the intent of the IGN article — it wasn't a top 5 negatives list at all. It was listing the top 5 reasons there has been skepticism — REGARDLESS of whether or not the skepticism is founded or unfounded.

The whole point is that the road has been bumpy so far due to the way the game has been portrayed, and it was not at all talking about how the game will actually pan out. She (the author) is talking merely about expectations…if you read carefully, it's fairly evident she's not herself complaining about the 5 things listed.

Poorly written article, and I really disagree with her saying windwaker was amongst the easiest Zelda games. To me Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess were the easiest, and Majora's Mask and Windwaker were the hardest.

who cares about what some bimbo has to say, we all know that skyward sword is going to be insanely awesome just like the others. what I hate is the fact that soooo many people keep saying the zelda games are too easy, I hate that. I want nintendo to make an impossibly hard zelda game just so to shut them up.

  • Bob

Very nice touch calling the article's writer a bimbo. Anyways, the real concern a Zelda fan should have towards Skyward Sword is if it will revitalize the series. In my honest opinion, Miyamoto's inspiration died with Majora's Mask.

I mean Wind Waker and TWP were decent games, but they were uninspired action role playing games, not the Zelda that was established on the N64.

  • Yea

hey yo um i agree with bob. the 64 four games were by far the best. Wind waker and twp were good games, i just hope theres no more spending days apon days looking for pieces of something. All i have to say is that the zelda series have been my favorite since in was a wee little lad.

  • Dan

i too agree with bob but also with some of what yea said. i love all zelda games up untill majora's mask. WW and TP where good games by themsleves, but with the name zelda behind them i expected more and was ultimatley dissapointed.

in this regard SW doesn't look like it is raising the bar once more like MM OOT and zelda games before them,… but it will still be a fun game in general. as a long time zelda fan i hope i'm wrong and that this game is abslutley kick ass.

  • joe

does anybody know the exact day this game will be released?

    • Noah

No. That has not been confirmed yet

  • Duri

i have been huge fan of the zelda series since the begining but in my opinon, i think that Shigeru should have also gone with the twilight princess graphics, who cares if he likes the cartoonish theme. what matters is that if the people will buy the game and like it. since twilight princess was a big hit, mostly from its amazing graphics. i dont think im going to buy it, i like the story line but from the year that we live in now, the game just looks too fake especially the settings. hopfully the next zelda game will be better. they still have time to fix it. its nintendo wer'e talking about.

I don't really agree with many when they say the graphics are gunna make the game worse. I mean (according to this site) the new gameplay and additions they've added to the game makes it all up. It seems like the story will be very good and the gameplay will be very amazing. Yes, I agree that Nintendo does not really go all-out graphically with the game, living up to the Wii's potential, but it really is not that big of an issue. I mean we're used to Wii games not being that graphically enhanced anyways :P . Also, I think that the graphics from TP and SS should not be really compared as they are completely different styles. Compared to WW now, this is a major improvement. For me, the graphics look fine and quite nice actually. I'm just looking for less repetitive gameplay (although it has always been this way for Zelda games) and combat that will always keep me intrigued throughout the entire game (unlike TP where it was very much the same and simple).

  • look….. i don't care. whatever or however this game comes out…. i just know…. ITS GOING TO BE EPICALLY F$&*!+ AWSOME!!!!!! ^_^ :D @) $_$ |X XD

  • wait does any one know when this game will come out? because recently G4 said they will be finishing early so when? (i wrote this on my wii)

  • ok hey guys the release date will be 10/4/2011 the games price is $49.99 yes i am jesus i saw it on ign

  • Colton

I agree about the art style. But this comes down to matters of personal taste. I prefer darker more realistic art than bright, colorful impressionistic art.

BUT, I'm definitely hoping for a challenging, more strategic Zelda game. Like Majora's Mask style of gameplay.

  • Miry

I'm gonna agree with Colton. Personally, i'm not a fan of the graphics, I prefer a more dark, realistic look. The last two games have been cell shaded and bright and I think it's time to show the public that Nintendo can do better graphically.

But i'm still looking forward to the game though, because if whats said about it being more challenging and strategic is true, then it should be epic. Plus… it's Zelda, so how can it not be? lol

I just really hope that the next Zelda title they come out with is TP style art, because I think it's about time to appeal to those fans too. I was slightly disappointed when I first saw the trailer… I wanna see Zelda with the look of Final Fantasy XIII. You have to admit, that would be pretty awesome.

So here's to Skyward Sword! Hope they give a release date soon.

  • craigsta

we all know hat the legend of zelda is the best rpg of all time and just when we thought it couldnt get better they surprise us this is gonna be one of the best one i just wish theyed hurry up and release it i got a stock of redbull for this 1 and who cares who says what but it play it and shut up!!!!!

  • Chance

I have to say that I disagree with you Miry. The graphics being at Final Fantasy Xiii's level would make it look unlike what Zelda should be. Zelda isn't supposed to be about the realistic look it is meant to be cartoonish and fun. Not necessarily for kids, but what I mean is that Zelda looked good in TP but no one I knew was immersed into Hyrule with all of the different aspects like colors and just overall look. TP was kind of a lost cause for me..it was too real in the franchise. Zelda can't be real..looking real ruins it. Think about the bosses, the monsters, and everything. That being real just doesn't work and won't work.

  • CMan

i agree with chance the graphics hasnt gone worse it just is a diiferent style so just shutup and wait to play the game
