Legend of Zelda RPG

Let’s face it, besides the Adventure of Link, the only thing changing in the Zelda series is what graphical style they choose to use in each game and perhaps instead of a regular boomerang, you discover a wing boomerang…compelling stuff. The series is in the mid 20’s and not much has change in its formula. There is an overhead view, Link collects the same items and attacks and defends the same way. Maybe it is time to take those elements that we love in the Legend of Zelda series and tweek it just a bit. The Final Fantasy RPG games are some of the most successful games out there, so imagine Link and Ganon fighting in a turn based attack RPG style game.

The Zelda formula could stay intact. Link awakens to be oblivious he is some kind of hero, all of a sudden a fairy bonks him on the head and just like that he is riding through Hyrule to save the beautiful elf-like princess Zelda. The only difference in the game play would be, each time you encounter an enemy you would enter a fight mode where you take turns choosing attacks, magic or healing options. Once the enemy is defeated, it would yield the same results as the series have always ha, rupees and heart pieces.

Not only would the die hard Zelda fans go for this, but you could attract a new style of gamer in who had never been a huge fan of straight up platformers and could possibly attract in gamers who for some reason only care for the graphic styles. After all, most of the attack scenes are usually pre-rendered and just repeat in different backgrounds and scenarios, Nintendo could take their time to create some amazing attack effects.

Before anyone complains that “this won’t work.” My response to you is, “it already has worked.” Nintendo turned side scrolling left to right Mario into a popular RPG series that continues to be best selling hits. They took all of the elements of the Mario series that fans loved and then turned it into a fun RPG adventure with turn based action. And for those who crave actually button mashing while attacking, Nintendo has also shown with Paper Mario that they are capable of incorporating ideas into attacks to allow for higher damage, such as hitting A or other command prompts at the right time. There is nothing preventing Nintendo from applying the same successful standards to the Zelda series.

At a time when new technologies are rushing in and Nintendo is looking for a hit, a RPG take on the Zelda franchise would be a breath of fresh air and offer us gamers a chance to see Hyrule from a new perspective.

I'm not huge on the idea of a Zelda RPG. I've never been a huge fan of Final Fantasy's system. I can tolerate Pokemon's formula, but most other RPGs take too long or get tedious. I'm all for changing the Zelda format, make no mistake, but I personally would not enjoy playing a Zelda RPG, unless they made it extremely unique.

The last things we need are more JRPGs on the shelves.

I'm not sold either… I honestly think RPGs can get pretty boring, I don't like turn-based action… HOWEVER, something like Tales of Symphonia is a little different… You do enter a battle mode wen you encounter an enemy, but it's not turned based; you have to power-up your attack, and different attacks are assigned to deifferent buttons, so it's still a bit of a strategy, but at least you don't have to watch yourself being handed your own ass while you wait until it's your turn to attack…

But for Zelda? Noooooot sure. :S

While I like the idea of mixing it up a bit with some new and diverse gameplay elements (Which Nintendo has already announced it's going to do with Zelda Wii), and while I like RPG's, loved Mario RPG, and would point to Nintendo's relatively good track record in messing with the formulas of its classic games and making it work amazingly – I am also not completely keen on the idea of a Zelda RPG. This is my primary reason:

Zelda is an adventure game, which is a close relative of an RPG. You already explore towns, dungeons, worldmaps of sorts, talk to people, etc; There is a real plot and storyline which plays an ever increasingly important role in the game. The switch to an RPG was a big one for Mario – Mario RPG gained a very distinct identity from its platforming predecessors. The switch for Zelda would be too small of a shift to mean much – it would simply remove one fun aspect of Zelda (the action and swordplay) and replace it with a turnbased system that may seem out of place and unneeded.

I DO think the Zelda francise could benefit from the introdution of some common RPG elements – the ability to level up or increase your stats through combat – the ability to have extra party members, including controllable ones – and a larger items list, specifically items you can buy in shops, since I always seem to have way too many Rupees in all the Zelda games I've played.

On a related note – I also think the introduction of the necessity to buy/catch food and eat it (another way to make me feel like I actually need Rupees for something) and the need and ability to sleep at night (I hated riding around on Epona whacking monsters for no reason waiting for the sun to come up/go down in TP).

I agree with e and Pastlink. I don't really think Zelda would be the game for a turn-based RPG. I like Zelda for the fast paced fighting, although Zelda does definitely need to change up a bit. I play Wind Waker and Oot mostly, and they're too similar. I think Nintendo's change could be transformed into something like the change between Oot and Majora's Mask (except without the 3 Day part). Like, how in Majora's mask you have to collect lots of things that are mostly easy to get (like the masks), but of corse, Majora's Mask I'm pretty sure has the whole temple routine (But I dont play Majora's Mask enough to be sure). All the temples sometimes annoy me. I am a big Zelda Fan, but I might be saying something dumb.

    Do want.

    That is all.

No no no no no no no.
I don't care what everyone else says about RPG's but the are just plain boring. Don't take a great franchise (that we all admit is beginning to falter) and make it stupid and boring by making it an RPG.

I dont think Zelda could be transformed into a RPG game, for two reasons. First, Every Zelda game has a unique development it's not like Mario, where you rescue Peach every single time. I know you're about to say "But in every zelda you beat ganon, and you save the princess". That's not what i mean. Example: Ocarina of Time was the c-button revolution. Majora's Mask, alowed you to use magical masks. Wind Waker alowed you to sail in an HUGE sea. Twilight Princess transforms link into a wolf, and returns the "Light world-Dark World" setup. Short story, every zelda i unique AND inmensely playable. Reason no. 2: It takes Team Zelda a really long time to make new zelda games, mainly because they have to innovate in some way. Taking into account the FANTASTIC action they've come to develop in a matter of combat, i'd say it would be a HUGE step back if they decided to go all "Rendered movements in different backgrounds" on us fans. Also, Zelda is a one char only game. We dont need no more than Link. That is not compatible with an RPG turn-based game (if you think of mario, that was a mayor risk, i dont think zelda will get THAT lucky).
So, anyway, if they want to make a nice RPG, i'd say the best way would be creating a MMORPG based on the Zelda world, and NOT in Zelda games. As a Zelda fan, i'd LOVE to roam in an inmense world and make legend of my own. I know some other fans will nail me for this. But think about it… The vast land of Hyrule… the beautiful world behind the legend. i'd like to live it beyond the limit of being Link…
Anyway :) i'll check the page again, just in case someone replies. i'd like to hear other fan's oppinions :D

Hmm… found my old comment on here, and after reading the other comments, I thought I'd reply, should anyone still be watching this thread.

A Zelda MMO would be awesome. Hyrule has so much depth behind it, it would be great to explore that depth in an MMO environment. Pulling off a proper Zelda MMO would be difficult, however. Most fans, myself included, wouldn't be happy with a typical MMO interface – it is too unzeldalike.

I dissagree with the notion that Zelda games must be one character only. Link is my all-time favorite game character – I name all my nameable main characters in other games "Link", and have from my early gaming days. I use Link on nearly all of my screen names. But I would still love to play as some other characters, or have other playable (or even non-playable) characters work in cooperation with Link. The puzzle solving elements this would open up would be awesome – especially if each character was equipped with different items and abilities. This could even come into play in boss fights, and make for some interesing ones. Think of the battle with Ganon on horseback in TP, with Zelda shooting the light arrows. Now expand that general concept throughout the game, improve the mechanics, and give your secondary characters their own life and some decent AI. Voila!

I think one more addition I'd love to see in a Zelda game is added depth to Hylian lore. A little bit of an archeological element, which Link already does to some degree, but expanded. There should be re-readable in-game lore (ie: a readable Book of Mudora, wall reliefs in dungeons and other sites that give background info, similar to the Pirate Data and Chozo Lore of the Metroid Prime games). There are so many ruins and mysteries hinted at in the Zelda games, I would love to be able to uncover more about them. It frustrated me, in TP, seeing the ruined walls and paved surfaces in Hyrule Field near Eldin Bridge, and not being able to find out how they got there or what they once were. It frustrated me not knowing the fate of the Kokiri or Gerudo between OoT and TP, and having only a very few clues to piece it together. Having a well hidden trail of clues to piece together the history of Hyrule in more depth would keep me happily busy for days on end, especially if it was well tied into the story and the progression of the game.

Oh, and I do not agree that the Zelda franchise is beginning to falter. It does need some fresh concepts and ideas, but it is still a solid franchise with alot of steam behind it. Save for civilization-ending cataclysm, I don't see it slowing down anytime soon.

Hey just saw that you commented to this. Thanks for coming back and replying. I would like to see a zelda MMO as well. I think that could turn into something that a lot of fans would enjoy.

And like you also I would like to see nintendo go in deeper with the history and lore a bit. Hyrule is a huge place and with all the fighting that has gone on there must be some ruins and it would be great if it could be expanded upon. I was intrigued by the graveyard in OoT but very little info was given about it which was irritating.

Zelda is allready a RPG. its a different kind of RPG but its still a RPG. Zelda is a action/puzzel RPG. Nintendo evan has said zelda is a RPG
