Industry Figures Express Concerns over Skyward Sword

In a recent discussion, posted on USA Today, several gaming industry figures spoke about the many blockbuster hits coming out this year. When asked which blockbuster game was most likely to disappoint, there was a lot of concern expressed towards the upcoming Zelda Skyward Sword.

Some of the quotes and concerns are listed below.

Which of the fall blockbusters is most likely to disappoint?

“I do wonder about The Legend of Zelda (Skyward Sword),” says Sessler. “It doesn’t have the usual fanboy craziness around it.”

“Blame the potential sales letdown for Skyward Sword — the first Zelda console title in five years — on the struggles of the Nintendo Wii”, says Pachter.

“I haven’t had anybody mention that there’s a Zelda game coming out,” he says. “It’s like they just forgot.”

Pachter suggests that Nintendo will pay the price for not launching a new system this holiday season. “The Wii has become an afterthought,” he says.

So there you have it. Do you think Skyward Sword will be a let down? Will the game sell a lot of copies? Let us know what you think in the comments!

time will tell..we shall see…fans will come out…thats who is targeted with zelda…its like star trek…they make it for the fans and the fans keep coming back for more……

  • …Those are lies. They should look at Zelda forums- or general gaming forums- if they want to really check out that. O.o

  • ??????

They serious? everyone i’ve talked says there getting it. so i really don’t think that this will be a let down at all.

  • zeldafan1982

This is really hilarious! They don't know what they are talking about..

Hell no. The game is looking to be the first to truly compete with Ocarina. And I couldn't care less how well it sells as long as they sell one to me.

I honestly don't think Skyward Sword will do very well. I doubt it will be a financial bomb like Spirit Tracks was, but you overtly Zelda fans have to realize your circle of friends who all say they want the game does not make up the majority of the gaming population. I know I'm not buying it, I'm spending my hard earned 60 bucks to slay epic Dragons in Skyrim rather then flying around on fruity birds in this game.

i sort of agree in a way. nintendo has let the Wii all but die now. it is a console that has been abused and left behind. everybody is moving on and it took them this long to get a legit real zelda title onto it.

      not smart nintendo

Spirit Tracks was hardly a financial bomb. It still sold well, just not as much a Phantom Hourglass did.

There is actually a sort of truth about that statement…most of the upcoming hits are coming for other consoles, like 3DS, PS3, Xbox360, PC, etc. Although I do have to disagree about the whole Skyward Sword disappointment thing: just because people are not talking about 'getting skyward sword', 'this is gonna be the best game ever!', 'gonna buy a wii just for that', etc. doesnt necesarily point out that many people are not going to buy it upon its release.
Besides, when considering how the game will do you have to think about a couple of things: 1) Its not just you that's buying it, Zelda is a very popular franchise around the world (or so I would like to think), nor is it just your circle of friends…think about it, 2) What's to say that circle of friends equals a massive 9000 thousand! (Okay, bad joke) Those guys are not keeping tabs on you on the forums, they only assume that nobody's talking about it because it's not in the front page, mentioned in a gaming site, no new news, etc. True, most people will not dare waste their savings on a game that is coming for a 'dying' console as Patcher points out when they can save towards other games that will be released earlier and are just as famous or well-known for other consoles. 3) Besides, just because we aren't talking about it nonstop doesn't mean we are not crazy about having the game.

The fact that they even suggest Nintendo release their new console is rather odd…the bomb with the 3DS was just on part that it was too expensive and had a poor line-up of games, most that will arrive by next year at the earliest or by this year's end. If I'm correct, releasing a console that early without no games, at all, could be a rather tragic mistake…think about it: If they do release the Wii U this early while some games are still in development it might cause the same thing all over again…sure, the new console may play the Wii games, but that will be about it. No eShop or whatever to add, because that is just too early. They don't seem to be rushing the PS3 or the Xbox360 to be replaced. True, the Wii may not be the most popular of all consoles, but that doesn't necessary stop it from being fun. So what of the graphics? If graphics matter that much then watch a movie, that simple. Not that good line-up of games, look at other consoles and do tell if all the games they got in their sleeve are good or bad, and you'll be surprised on how many make it into "Games that Ruined My Life and Stole My Money" List, after all, we all have different tastes.

So what if they have taken this long to release an exclusive Zelda title on a console that was left behind? Has that ever stopped anyone from buying it?
    Of course not.
Assuming it's going to be a disappointment, financially, it doesn't necessarily mean its true. If you want to buy it, go for it.

I'd have to agree rushing the Wii-U out we be a terrible mistake. Nintendo does not need to rush out a new console (though a system capable of supporting epic graphics is a really nice thing to have in their position…), they just need good games. I don't want to put down Skyward Sword because I've not played it yet, but just look at it compared to other games like Skyrim. In Skyrim I'm going to be embarking on a massive open ended quest, facing epic looking creatures in titanic battles. In Skyward Sword…. half the enemies look pretty goofy and the textures feel like a giant step back from TP, I'm willing to claim that they look almost like MS Paint quality. Granted art style is subjective and a matter of taste, but if graphics are not important then how would you all feel if they released just a text based Zelda game with no graphics at all? Graphics are important because imagery has an important affect on our psyche. I used to play Zelda to face epic threats that wanted to bring doom to Hyrule. Nowdays the most threatening creature to face me in Zelda games are googly eyed brightly colored rats. The threats and the tension in Zelda has been gone since Phantom Hourglass, and I think people are slowly but surely starting to feel the same way with each Zelda release. Sure the fanatics will like Zelda no matter how wacky it gets, but again they do not represent the majority of the gaming population who I feel would rather fight an epic threatening dragon then a cuddly Chu Chu anyday.

Ooro and Fyras – these are some the best responses ive ever seen on this site. thanks so much for participating in this discussion

Although the end was pretty disappointing, I was thrilled playing TP. Why? Because you got that Zelda feeling; completely agree with Ooro on that matter. Hoping they would develop a new title with enhanced graphics but the same
styling, I was truly let down when I saw the Skyward trailer. Why make the mistake once more to go back to kiddy Windwaker style? That is not what Zelda should be about. Nintendo! Wake the f*** up and stop abusing an epic game like Zelda and turn it into the greatest, most amazing adventure game of all time; it deserves no less. Kick those 'creative' goofy minds out of the team, assign them to 'Mario & the abandoned goofy Zelda creatures', and amaze us soon!!

I am not a long-time Zelda fan. I have only really played TP and I loved it and beat it twice. Currently playing WW.

I'm really looking forward to SS.
I don't care if Wii is a dying console. Everyone knows that where the Wii lacks in graphics, its stories and gameplay make up for it. Wii for the wiin! I'm too poor to buy any other console anyway.

I love TP's graphics. Though Wii-haters may consider it eye-death and Zelda fans may consider it too brown-and-real, I love it!

So I've taken the complete graphics-wise opposite turn and I'm playing WW. So far, the graphics are adorable, but I guess it wouldn't cater to gamers who think that more realistic means more advanced means cooler means hardcore.

I seriously don't give a crap about the graphics.
If Nintendo releases a point-and-click text-based game with a good story a la Phoenix Wright/Hotel Dusk 215, I'll be the first in line.

Seriously, people, what is up with the graphics debate?
If the SS controls fail with the new controls, hey, I still get a good story out of it and I'll remember it the rest of my life and I can tell that story to my kids.
However, if the story fails, at least I've learned not to blink for 5 hours straight.

Also, I understand Miyamoto's sentiments about keeping Link silent, but would it kill him to give voices to the other characters? I liked Midna's gibberish from TP. It made her more alive and less claustrophobic. Will the SS speak gibberish too?

I'm super excited about the soundtrack. I love classical music, especially in video game soundtracks.
