A while back we reported on a rumor that Retro Studios may be working on the next Legend of Zelda game. And even before that there had been murmurings of 3rd party development intervention into our beloved Zelda series.
Shigeru Miyamoto, Zelda creator, commented last year that Nintendo may be partnering with more Western studios which led many to think that Zelda may get this treatment as well. In that discussion he brought up the fact that Retro had worked on the Metroid series, would go onto work on Donkey Kong Country Returns, and stated that maybe Zelda could be in the future.
IGN recently got a chance to sit down with Eiji Aonuma to discuss this possibility. They asked Aonuma what was the possibility of Retro, or a similar studio, working on the Zelda series. And as we are all well aware, he mentioned that the Zelda series had several 3rd party developers work on it in the past. This list includes Capcom who did the Oracles, Minish Cap, and Four Swords and Grezzo who worked on Ocarina of Time 3D. And in case you were not aware, Monolish Soft even got to work on Skyward Sword to a degree.
Though Aonuma would not give any precise answers, he did note that Nintendo was looking to partner with more companies for resource extensive projects. Maybe this will be a Zelda project at some time and maybe not.
What do you think about this? Should Nintendo put Zelda in the hands of another company again?
