Aonuma Talks Zelda Wii U Ideas

In a recent interview with Nintendo Power, Zelda mastermind, Eiji Aonuma, spoke about the potential of the Wii U controller on the Legend of Zelda series. Aonuma discussed the ovbious move away from Skyward Sword’s motion Plus controls to the Wii U’s touch screen.

He mentioned that with the Wii, gamers got to use the Wiimote and Nunchuck as Link’s sword and shield. With the Wii U however, he sees the controller as a mean of becoming the items that Link is using and as a way for Link to interact with Hyrule.

“With The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, we had the Nunchuck and Wii Remote sort of stand in for the sword and shield that Link carried,” says Aonuma. “But in a game for the Wii U, I can definitely see something like the controller itself becoming the different items that Link is using, allowing you to interact with the game world and with the game items in a very different way.”

He went on to discuss how the Wii U tablet controller could be used, similar to the DS handhelds, as an item management system.

“Imagine having the contents of Link’s satchel available to you on the screen of your controller. Each item could then “use elements of the pouch to interact with gameplay on the television.”

So what do you think? Do you like the ideas presented? Are you glad that the Zelda series is probably moving away from motion controls? Discuss this in the comments below.

I obviously haven't been able to play Skyward Sword yet, but I don't want them to move away from motion controls right away. For me, the more professional the swordplay is, eg. weaving and striking at the right moment rather than just button-mashing, the more fun it is. The whole idea behind Skyward Sword just seems better to me; even Twilight Princess had some great one-on-one sword fights. No matter how many interesting tools are added, the sword always remains the foremost method of attack, and I think it should get the best treatment.

I hope the normal sword and shield equipment, and possibly the bow will still be used with motion controls. It is just more realistic.

  • Being disabled i definitely want them to move away from the motion controls, i was very disappointed when i read that skyward sword was only motion controlled. Though i understand that people want to immerse themselves into the game more I think if they added a typical controller option like they did for Twilight Princess it would accommodate more of the gaming community.

What I found interesting is that there was not a whole lot of creative ideas brought up here. Touch bad inventory…we had that in Phantom Hourglass and touch controls on the game was limited.

I hope it will not be like PH where we use the touch pad to move entirely

I enjoy the idea of the nun Nunchuck for the Shield and the Wii Remote for the Sword, it makes you feel like you’re actually there.

I agree the Motion Controls in twilight princess on the sword and shield made you feel like you were link while using the sword and YOU were mashing Ganondorf, Zant or another enemy, I dont want to just flick my hands around on a screen, doing so would be a bad turning point for zelda.

Motion control is cool, But. I often found myself playing the Gamecube version of Twilight Princess much more than the Wii version. In fact, once I completed the Wii version entirely, the Gamecube version was being released, and I never touched the Wii version since.

Also, I really would like Link to be a lefty again.

This might sound kinda spammy, but I absolutely love your theme! Zelda looks so beautiful :) Is that Midna on the other side of the sword?
