Aonuma: Remakes Hurt

Legend of Zelda Producer Eiji Aonuma recently revealed his thought process regarding updating old games after the very much anticipated Majora’s Mask 3D was released today.

“To put it as bluntly as I possibly can, remakes kind of hurt,” he said. “You’ re looking at all the decisions you were making and sometimes you’re saying to yourself, ‘I can’t believe I was thinking about it like that,’ or, ‘Why did I think it was okay to make the user do that in that situation?’”

Though that statement might set fans back, Aonuma also opened up, saying that he found the experience really valuable. “This is something that Mr. Miyamoto made a point of telling me at one time,” he continued. “He said, ‘You need to look back and learn more from the work you’ve already done, before you go on to making something new.’ I have to say, that can be a really uncomfortable experience, but I also feel like I learned so much. I’m actually really grateful that I had the opportunity to do something like that at work.”

As most fans of the Zelda series will admit, they are very happy to see the 3D follow up to Ocarina of Time be available on the 3DS as well. Meanwhile, many fans are still eager for more news of the upcoming Legend of Zelda Wii U title, feeling that Majora’s Mask 3D was just a quick way to win fans over again.

How do you feel about this thought process, Zelda fans? Do these remakes really “hurt?” Or are you just excited to see an updated Zelda title? Tell us in the comments below!

They definitely do not hurt the franchise. I know that Aonuma meant that it hurts him to make them. I understand in a way. As an artist, it is sometimes difficult to look back at my old work, and I often wonder what I was thinking at the time I made it.
